Assistant Accountant Level 3

Programme Overview
The Level 3 Assistant Accountant apprenticeship develops individuals who can provide technical accounting expertise and support across a range of accounting functions. In a school context, this includes assisting with the preparation of management accounts, supporting budget setting and monitoring, preparing financial statements, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Apprentices will develop a deeper understanding of accounting principles, VAT, payroll, and the use of accounting software. This programme is well-suited to school finance officers or finance managers looking to strengthen their technical accounting capability and typically includes AAT Level 3 qualification study.
What Your Staff Will Learn
- Prepare and process financial transactions including journals, reconciliations and accruals
- Assist with the preparation of management accounts and financial statements
- Support budget setting, monitoring and variance analysis to inform decision-making
- Understand and apply VAT regulations, payroll processes, and tax compliance requirements
- Use accounting software including Excel and specialist accounting packages effectively
- Maintain accurate and complete accounting records in line with organisational procedures
- Prepare reports and summaries for senior finance staff and management
- Understand the financial governance requirements of schools and public sector organisations
Entry Requirements
- 1Currently working in a finance or accounts role in a school, MAT, or similar organisation
- 2English and maths at Level 2 required prior to End Point Assessment
- 3Be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week in England
- 4Have the right to work in the UK
- 5Prior experience in financial administration or accounts is advantageous
Off-the-Job Training
Dedicated off-the-job training during normal working hours. Includes online learning, workshops, and AAT qualification study embedded within the programme. Funded via the Growth and Skills Levy (maximum funding band: £8,000). Non-levy employers contribute 25%.
End Point Assessment
End Point Assessment includes a portfolio-based interview and a professional discussion or examination. Grades: Fail / Pass / Merit / Distinction. Typical training is 15–18 months followed by EPA period.
