Programme Overview

The Level 3 Cyber Security Technician apprenticeship prepares individuals to provide first-line cyber security support. This requires monitoring and detecting potential security threats, escalating as necessary, and supporting secure and uninterrupted business operations through the implementation of cyber security mechanisms and controls. Apprentices contribute to the delivery of a security culture across an organisation, understand vulnerabilities and threats, and support the development of an organisation's cyber security maturity. Specific tasks include patching software, installing software updates, implementing access control, configuring firewalls, and working with SIEM tools. They will work within a Security Operations Centre or Network Operations Centre under supervision.

What Your Staff Will Learn

  • Apply procedures and controls to maintain security and control of an organisation
  • Contribute to the production and development of security culture across an organisation
  • Process cyber security helpdesk requests ensuring confidentiality, integrity and availability
  • Monitor and detect potential security threats and escalate as necessary
  • Implement cyber security mechanisms including patching, access control, firewalls and SIEM tools
  • Keep up-to-date with legislation and industry standards including GDPR, Data Protection Act, and Computer Misuse Act
  • Communicate effectively as part of a multi-functional team using technical and non-technical language
  • Understand and apply the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) in real-world scenarios

Entry Requirements

    Currently working in or moving into a cyber security or IT support role

    English and maths at Level 2 required prior to End Point Assessment
  • 3
    Be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week in England
  • 4
    Have the right to work in the UK
  • 5
    Some roles may require security clearance checks depending on the organisation

Off-the-Job Training

Dedicated off-the-job training during normal working hours. Includes online learning, workshops, and hands-on cyber security tasks applied in setting. Funded via the Growth and Skills Levy (maximum funding band: £11,000). Non-levy employers contribute 25% (£2,750).

End Point Assessment

End Point Assessment includes a work-based practical assessment and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence. Grades: Fail / Pass / Merit / Distinction. Typical EPA period follows the 18-month training phase.
