L5 Speech, Language & Communication Leadership
Build strong leadership and operational management skills while gaining specialist expertise in supporting children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
Programme Overview
This Level 5 programme equips practitioners with the essential knowledge and skills to support their SENCO in providing and modelling strong practices to support individual learners with SLCN. You will develop a strong understanding of national policy and legislation, lead effective communication interventions across your setting, drive strategic change, and strengthen collaboration between settings and specialist services. The programme includes the nationally-recognised Higher Level Communications Practitioner (HLCP) award from OCN London.
What Your Staff Will Learn
- The ability to liaise effectively with the SENCO, parents, and local SLCN and Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) services
- Enhanced team management skills, including coaching and mentoring of colleagues to effectively support speech, language and communication skills
- Improved knowledge to understand and identify SLCN, and to implement effective support strategies
- The confidence and skills to make data-driven decisions including monitoring and evaluation of activities and interventions for pupils with SLCN
- The confidence to support/lead referrals to SaLT and SLCN services for diagnostic and clinical assessments and advice
- The nationally-recognised Higher Level Communications Practitioner award from OCN London
- Champion inclusive practices and drive strategic change across your setting
Entry Requirements
- 1Experience working in an educational setting as a Teaching Assistant, LSA or equivalent for at least one year (FTE)
- 2Hold Elklan's Level 3 qualification in Speech and Language Support for 5–11s or 11–16s, OR NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Supporting Children and Young People's Speech, Language and Communication
- 3Minimum GCSE English at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above, or equivalent Level 2 Functional Skills
- 4Support from your Headteacher/line manager and SENCO
- 5Be employed at least 16 hours a week with at least 50% of working hours in England
- 6Have lived in England for the last three years and have the right to work in the UK
Off-the-Job Training
Self-paced online learning with live online workshops. In-person or virtual termly progress reviews. The programme comprises five phases: Knowing your organisation; Understanding the landscape and identifying areas for development; Preparing to lead change; Leading change; Evaluating impact.
End Point Assessment
Assessment includes a Portfolio, Work-based project, Presentation with questions and answers, and a Virtual observation. The 2-month EPA period follows the 17-month study phase.
